Google acquires online malware scanning service VirusTotal

Google announced that it had acquired online free malware scanning service VirusTotal. So we can expect more features from VirusTotal soon.

VirusTotal provides a free checking of files for viruses. It uses more than 40 AntiVirus solutions to check for malwares that the user's own AV may have missed or to verify against any false positives.

"we’re delighted that Google, a long-time partner, has acquired VirusTotal. This is great news for you, and bad news for malware generators" VirusTotal Team said in the blog post.

The purchase will improve the quality and power of VirusTotal's malware research tools as well as make the tools readily available.

VirusTotal will continue to operate independently and maintain existing partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts.

Google didn't say how it will be integrating the VirusTotal technology, but it is possible that VirusTotal could be integrated throughout Google Apps to protect users against malicious files shared through Gmail and other programs.
